overheard: Antarctica

Omi, (O-E as Kalea says it), climbing out of the car at Grandma's:

" This Isn't Hawaii! It's Antarctica!! "

Truth: It is cold here.

Don't be fooled by the smile. She's not fond of the cold either. We had a "cold spell" in Hawaii a few weeks before Christmas to get us ready for the cold (and by cold spell I mean high 50's, low 60's - haha, I know you're laughing your head off at me. But it is a little cold when the windows don't close and blankets are thin!) Kalea came wandering in one morning holding her hands out in front of her and staring at them in disbelief muttering, "stuck, stuck, stuck!" I took her hands in mine and said, "Oh, they're cold." I wish I had it on camera. She went around the house for the next 10 minutes holding her hands out in front of her saying, "cold, cold" and doing a little brrr shake to go along with it.

Getting her into the snowsuit was an experience. You've seen "The Christmas Story", right? RIGHT???? After the first few layers were on, I started installing her into the snowsuit. By this point she had given up fighting and just laid there as still as could be with her eyes nervously moving back and forth wondering what hideous thing we were zipping her into. Once up, she just stood there, arms spread straight out.

Kalea was a good sport. She allowed us to pull her around in the sled and even took a ride with Grandpa on the snowmobile.

Naomi, on the other hand, did not want to go near the snowmobiles. She was content watching the others zip around, making snow balls and tromping around in the snow.

... until everyone was nearly done... the girls talked her into getting into the sled with them...

And then Grandpa finally talked her into climbing on... and away they went.

I was complaining about the cold yesterday and Mark gently reminded me, "Don't worry, spring starts for you in 4 days."

I do miss the warmth, but we LOVE being with family for the Christmas holidays!!
